On call explained
Being on call means you are available to respond to your employer if needed — whether or not you are physically at work. You must stay reachable and be able to attend within an agreed response time. It is an availability period, not a guaranteed set of hours.

What is it?
Unlike an early, late, or night shift, an on-call period does not have set start and end times for actual work. Instead, it is a period of availability — you must be reachable and able to respond if called. You may spend the whole period at home and never be contacted. Or you may be called in multiple times.
On-call shifts are common in healthcare, IT, engineering, utilities, and emergency services. The length of an on-call period can range from a few hours to a full 24 hours. It typically appears on a rota or roster as a distinct marker — separate from your regular worked shifts.
In ShiftFlowr, On Call is treated as an all-day availability type — no fixed times, just a clear calendar marker that you are on standby for that day.
What's it called where you are?

Bleep Cover is a specific NHS term, referring to a clinician who carries the ward bleep (pager) and must respond to calls from nursing staff or switchboard. It is not used outside UK healthcare.
Who is typically on call?
Junior doctors, specialist nurses, surgeons, and on-call pharmacists carry bleep cover or on-call duties outside normal shifts. NHS rotas typically mark on-call periods separately from Earlies, Lates, and Nights.
Systems engineers, network engineers, and IT support staff carry on-call responsibilities outside office hours to respond to incidents. Often structured as rota-based standby weeks.
Gas, electricity, and water engineers are placed on standby rotas to respond to faults and emergencies outside normal working hours.
Some specialist emergency service roles — mountain rescue, coastguard, specialist surgical teams — carry on-call periods alongside their regular shift pattern.

On-call periods sync to your device calendar, so they appear alongside personal events without having to enter them twice.
ShiftFlowr's 24-hour and 30-minute reminders also fire for on-call periods — useful for knowing to stay sober, keep your phone charged, or stay within response distance.
